Best Wedding Venues in Highlands, Cashiers, & Lake Toxaway NC

Quiet Luxury in the Clouds

As an Asheville photographer, I have the privilege of exploring some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Western North Carolina. But there is a particular kind of magic that exists just a bit further west—an exclusive, rustic, and breathtakingly chic world in Highlands, Cashiers, and Lake Toxaway.

For couples planning a weekend-long celebration where Southern hospitality meets European elegance, this region is unrivaled. Think crisp mountain air, 100-mile views, farm-to-table cuisine, and world-class accommodations.

If you are curating a destination wedding weekend that your guests will talk about for years, here are my top, absolutely favorite venues in the WNC plateau.

1. Flat Mountain Farm (Highlands)

The Modern Romantic’s Dream

Flat Mountain Farm is a 28-acre "mountain-modern micro-resort" that feels like a hidden sanctuary. Nestled just outside the bustling center of Highlands, it brings a rustic minimal Scandinavian design to the Rhododendron forests.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: The contrast between the moody, dark-stained Scandi event barn and the lush surrounding forest is unparalleled. You can have your ceremony by their private lake—perfect for that mirror-reflection shot—or tucked away by a cascading waterfall.

  • The Vibe: Elevated rustic, intimate, and exclusive. The luxury cabins on-site (The Wren and The Kingfisher) are perfect for a weekend buyout where your wedding party can stay together.

2. The Farm at Old Edwards Inn (Highlands)

The Epitome of Highland’s Luxury

When people think of luxury in WNC, they think of Old Edwards. Their private off-site venue, The Farm, is in a league of its own. It combines a pastoral, rustic setting with impeccable, top-tier service.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: The Orchard House and the Barn offer gorgeous, bright interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows, while the outdoor wedding lawn is manicured perfection. The lighting at sunset behind the hills is phenomenal.

  • The Vibe: Timeless, polished, romantic luxury. With 33 acres, it feels sprawling yet intimately yours.

3. Lonesome Valley (Cashiers)

Breathtaking Valley Floor Magic

Situated at the foot of the largest box canyon east of the Mississippi, Lonesome Valley in Cashiers is a dramatic backdrop that simply cannot be replicated.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: The sheer scale of the 1,000-foot granite cliffs of Cow Rock Mountain creates a breathtaking, emotional experience for a ceremony. The rustic yet sophisticated Jennings Barn is perfect for receptions, and the farm-to-table food from Canyon Kitchen is exceptional.

  • The Vibe: Serene, expansive, awe-inspiring, and naturally luxurious.

4. Highland Falls Country Club (Highlands)

Distinctive Mountain Sophistication

For the couple seeking a private club setting, Highland Falls offers an elevated wedding experience nestled in the verdant Highlands landscape. It’s perfect for couples looking for classic, timeless elegance.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: It combines impeccable club amenities with incredible outdoor spaces overlooking mountain vistas and signature waterfall backdrop. It’s a bit more intimate than a large resort, offering a very private experience for your photos.

  • The Vibe: Classic, refined, exclusive Southern luxury.

5. The Greystone Inn on Lake Toxaway

Lakeside European Glamour

Located on the shore of North Carolina’s largest private lake, The Greystone Inn offers a historic, Gatsby-esque atmosphere that feels both quaint and incredibly elevated.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: It’s all about the water. A ceremony on the lawn right by the lakeside, followed by a cocktail hour on the veranda, offers a unique alternative to mountain-top views. The architecture is stunning and provides an impressive and intimate backdrop for your photos.

  • The Vibe: Old-world charm, elegant, water-focused, and peaceful.

6. The Vineyard at Betty’s Creek (Sylva)

The Old-World Heritage Estate

The Vineyard at Betty’s Creek is a sprawling North Carolina gem that combines the feeling of a private European countryside estate with a mountain retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spanning over 600 acres, this venue is anchored by a 1900s-era farmhouse and framed by tiered vineyards and long-range views of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Why I Love Photographing Here: The architectural variety is a dream. Between the rustic-refined Dunkard Barn and the elegant Grand Pavilion, there is no shortage of backdrops. The "Honeymoon Cottage"—an authentic 1800s log cabin—offers a moody, historic texture for getting-ready portraits that contrasts with the verdant, sun-dappled ceremony lawn at the base of the hill.

The Vibe: Timeless, grand, and soulful. It’s the ideal spot for couples who want a luxe destination feel with deep Appalachian roots. With the ability to stay on-site at the Lodge, it transforms a wedding day into a relaxed, multi-day mountain experience.

7. Castle Ladyhawke (Tuckasegee)

The Fairytale Escape

Castle Ladyhawke is an authentic, 10,000-square-foot Scottish-inspired castle perched on a 60-acre estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located near the Nantahala National Forest about an hour from Asheville and 25 minute from Highlands, this venue blends medieval romance with high-elevation mountain views.

  • Why I Love Photographing Here: The architectural variety is a photographer's playground. You can capture editorial portraits on the sweeping spiral staircase, intimate moments by the stained-glass windows in the Great Hall, or wide-angle landscapes on the Mountain View Lawn. For a truly iconic shot, the "Witch’s Hat" tower provides a regal backdrop that you simply won't find anywhere else in North Carolina.

  • The Vibe: Regal, timeless, and storybook-inspired. It’s perfect for couples who want a destination feel that balances old-world Scottish charm with the rugged beauty of Appalachia.

8. First Presbyterian Church, Highlands

A Classic Highlands Tradition

Located in the heart of downtown Highlands, the First Presbyterian Church is a staple for couples seeking a traditional, elegant ceremony.

  • Why I love photographing here: The church’s timeless architecture provides a classic backdrop for "just married" moments. It’s frequently paired with receptions at nearby luxury estates like The Farm at Old Edwards

  • The Vibe: Heartfelt, historic, and perfectly situated for a seamless transition to a mountain-chic reception.

9. The Chattooga Club Cashiers

Effortlessly Chic: Heritage in the High Country

The Chattooga Club is the epitome of exclusive, high-country luxury. Nestled against the mountains, it feels more like a private sanctuary than a traditional venue.

  • Photography Perspective: This venue is a dream for its variety of textures—from the perfectly manicured croquet lawns to the rustic-luxe wooden gazebos and exposed ceiling beams, the epitome of quiet luxury.

  • The Vibe: Defined by events that honor deep family roots in the area, it speaks to a lifetime of tradition in Highlands and Cashiers.

10. High Hampton Inn, Cashiers

Panoramic Mountain Lodge

A beloved destination for generations, High Hampton Inn has been revitalized with a modern, "chic mountain resort" feel that still honors its rich heritage.

  • Photography Perspective: The dahlia gardens are legendary—I always recommend sneaking away for sunset portraits among the blooms. The views of Whiteside Mountain from The Halstead House provide a dramatic, panoramic scale that is hard to beat.

  • The Vibe: Think upscale camp vibe for adults. It’s perfect for a full weekend buyout where guests can enjoy the private lake and iconic red rocking chairs.

Highlands and the surrounding plateau offer more than just a venue—they offer an experience rooted in heritage and signature comfort. Whether you are in the rhododendron forest at Flat Mountain Farm or honoring deep family roots on the manicured lawns of The Chattooga Club, these spaces offer the perfect blend of natural beauty and elevated design.

If you are planning a weekend that is authentic, intimate, and intentionally designed, I would love to be there to capture the quiet, candid moments between the big ones.
